We welcome Dr. Bryan Hampton to our July meeting of the C. S. Lewis Society of Chattanooga. Dr. Hampton is the Kennedy Distinguished Teaching Professor, Department of English, at UTC.
His topic: "Breath, Song, and Self Will: Lewis & Tolkien on Creation and Temptation".
C. S. Lewis’s and J. R. R. Tolkien’s impulses to create the beautiful and fragile mythic worlds of Narnia and Middle-earth were shaped in part by the brutal destruction and devastation of the Great War. This lecture discusses how The Magician’s Nephew and The Silmarillion both depict the first moments of creation by the Lion Aslan and the God Ilúvatar, respectively, through the metaphor of music, and render protagonists who grapple with villains that disrupt the song of creation and seek to recreate the world in their own image.
The lecture will be held at The Meeting House, 3912 Dayton Blvd, Chattanooga, Tennessee 37415, Thursday, July 27. We hope you can attend. The lecture and Q&A will be 7:00-8:00 p.m.; the coffee shop will be open until 9:00. $5 at the door. It's going to be good! :-)
